Custom pillows, reviewed in words
Custom pillow design tools and print services, reviewed
A custom pillow is two decisions: the tool you design its face in, and the service that prints, sews and fills it. Reviews here will cover both, in plain words rather than scores, so you can see what each one suits before you order.
Before you order
What decides how a custom pillow turns out
Six things, laid out like chips from a fabric deck. Each one changes the finished pillow more than another pass at the artwork would.
- Chip 01 Material
Fabric
Cotton, linen blends, velvet and polyester take ink differently. A textured weave softens fine detail; a smooth one keeps it.
- Chip 02 Process
Print method
Dye sublimation needs a polyester fabric and leaves no raised layer of ink; other methods print onto cotton. The method narrows which fabrics are on offer.
- Chip 03 Format
Size and shape
Square, lumbar and round pillows each crop a design differently, so the size is worth fixing before the artwork is finished.
- Chip 04 Fill
Insert and filling
Some services sell the cover alone, others a filled pillow. Check which one you are ordering, and what the insert is made of.
- Chip 05 Check
Ordering a proof
A screen preview shows placement. It cannot show how a colour sits on fabric; a printed sample, where one is offered, can.
- Chip 06 Aftercare
Care and washing
A cover with a zip or envelope back comes off to be washed. A pillow sewn shut usually has to be spot cleaned instead.
On the back of every chip
How reviews here are written
Three rules every review on this site keeps to.
-
No scores
A tool or a service is described in words. There are no ratings, points or ranked tiers.
-
Prices carry a date
Where a price is quoted, it is taken from the provider's own pricing page, with the date it was read.
-
Plain links
Links to Adobe Express, print services and other tools are ordinary links. This site earns no commission from them.
One chip at a time
Making a custom pillow, in order
The order matters: each step fixes something the next one depends on.
-
Design the face
In a design tool such as Adobe Express, sized to the pillow you mean to order.
-
Pick the fabric
It decides the print method, and the print method decides how fine the detail can be.
-
Choose size and insert
Cover only, or filled, and in which shape.
-
Check the proof
Placement, margins and the seam line, before anything is printed.
-
Place the order
With the fabric, size and fill you checked, not the defaults.
